As a longtime, loyal Cub fan, there is only one thing that could keep me from following the team in the future, and that would be a Tribune Co. decision not to renew Steve Stone’s contract.
The suffering caused by the Cubs’ lack of execution all year was alleviated by Stone’s unflinching analysis. When the Cubs stink it up, I don’t want to hear excuses for the players. The job of an analyst is to critique performance, and we have the best man in the business at doing that.
If Stone is fired, the fans will take it as a personal insult to their intelligence. Don’t underestimate your fan base. Joe Carter? Please.
