If Americans believe George Bush’s latest alarms about the future of Social Security, it will prove President Abraham Lincoln was wrong: You can fool all of the people all of the time. Bush repeatedly stated that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and misled voters and Congress into supporting his plans to invade that country even though Saddam Hussein wasn’t responsible for Sept. 11, 2001.

Now we face a similar situation with Bush’s calls to switch to a policy of privatizing Social Security.

Before we rush into adopting such a drastic solution, we need our representatives to step back and have a detailed public discussion about a program that has such a profound effect on the lives of so many Americans.
