This is regarding the Chicago Tribune article “Killer disease returns to stalk dogs” (Page 1, Feb. 6).

The harrowing article, about the deadly distemper illness that kills dogs and other creatures, was equally frightening and enlightening.

Pet owners and animal-welfare proponents must prioritize the health of their companion animals rather than lavishly spending money on ostentatious grooming, gifts and clothing–which are totally unnecessary and, frankly, garish.

All canines, felines, birds, fish and other critters that are priceless pets merit health care and immunization from lethal diseases.

Furthermore it is far preferable for animal lovers to donate cash to anti-cruelty organizations rather than squandering money on pet beauty pageants and other gratuitous events.

Animals are wondrous because of their invaluable loyalty.

They do not need to be deemed members of royalty.
