1. Game 6 implosion

October 2003

After replacing Mark Prior in the infamous eighth inning of Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, Farnsworth gives up the go-ahead sacrifice fly to Florida’s Jeff Conine and a two-out, three-run double to Mike Mordecai that puts the game out of reach. But Farnsworth’s performance gets lost in the controversy over the foul ball.

2. Kicking the fan

August 2004

After giving up six runs in the ninth inning while mopping up a loss to Houston at Wrigley Field, Farnsworth wrenches his right knee kicking an electric fan and is placed on the disabled list. He finishes with a 6.84 earned-run average after the All-Star break.

3. Pummeling Wilson

June 2003

Challenged by Reds pitcher Paul Wilson after throwing an up-and-in pitch on a bunt attempt, Farnsworth takes down Wilson like a linebacker, earning a three-game suspension and instant admiration from Cubs fans. The admiration was short-lived, and Farnsworth fell back into disfavor at Wrigley Field in ’04.

4. Asleep in clubhouse

August 2002

Farnsworth is nailed by some as the anonymous culprit who fell asleep in the clubhouse during an August 13 day game, which prompted a tirade by interim manager Bruce Kimm. Farnsworth eventually admits to the sleeping episode the following spring.

5. Farnsworth deer

September 2004

A fake deer head in Farnsworth’s locker turns into a bizarre good luck charm when the Cubs decide to cart it around the country during their final road trip of the season. But when the plastic deer comes apart in Shea Stadium, so do the Cubs, leading to an ignominious ending for both Farnsworth and the Farnsworth deer.
