The man slain outside a River North nightclub fired a gun before he was shot, Chicago police said Saturday.

Coryel Stephens, 22, of Maywood died of multiple gunshot wounds outside Door 21, 151 W. Ohio St., early Friday morning, said a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Stephens was on parole for a 2003 conviction for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and he had prior drug convictions.

Two other men were treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Police spokeswoman JoAnn Taylor said those two men, whose shooting injuries were not life threatening, were bouncers at the club.

The incident started with a quarrel inside the club that involved at least some employees and turned into a fight before those involved were ordered outside, said police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak. Stephens fired a handgun several times before he was shot, she said.
