With the aim of reducing the feral cat population in McHenry County, two animal welfare groups have banded together to hold a “M*A*S*H”-style spay-neuter clinic.

The clinic, sponsored by Animal Outreach Humane Society and Helping Paws Animal Welfare Association, will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday in Building D of the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Woodstock. It is the first of its kind being opened to the public.

“What’s unique about this is that two organizations are working together to solve a big problem,” said Sonja Treptau of Animal Outreach. “There’s a feral cat overpopulation in McHenry County. Statistics show that we have about 20,000 to 30,000 feral cats. A lot aren’t spayed or neutered.”

People caring for outdoor cats can call 815-385-0005 or 815-459-2641 for an appointment. The groups hope to hold another clinic next month, Treptau said.
