When recently passing through the airport in Ft. Myers, Fla., I witnessed an elderly, frail and pale woman being escorted to an area where a more extensive security check could be performed. Initially I thought she was ill and, being a nurse, I asked if I could be of assistance. I was promptly told by a Transportation Security Administration employee that this was a security issue. Now this seemed like a ludicrous waste of time in my opinion.

So I hope people will please refrain from griping about displaying passports when visiting Canada or Mexico. It may be cumbersome but it is nowhere near the level of discomfort the traveler in Florida experienced.

We are all cooperating with authorities to assist in every way possible to prevent another Sept. 11, 2001. So although things may appear strange and unnecessary in some people’s eyes, we can never exert enough caution and prevention.
