This is regarding the Tribune article “Put it down or pay up, city warns motorists; Starting July 8, drivers in Chicago who are caught talking on cell phones without hands-free devices face fines of $50 to $200” (Page 1, May 12).
Do the mayor and aldermen really care about safety or just collecting revenue?
Back in the ’70s, I lived in Lisle but worked in Aurora.
I parked on the street one day and got back to my car to find a ticket for not having an Aurora city sticker ($2).
I called the city and told an employee that I was not a resident.
The city employee said that I should get a non-resident sticker for $1.
I said if I had to get a non-resident sticker for every city I drove through and put them on my windshield, that I would not be able to see while I drove.
Her response was, “Oh we never thought of that.”
I would suggest that unless those running Chicago are ready to put a sign on every street that is a border street into the city warning drivers about the ban on holding cell phones that they be prepared for an onslaught of lawsuits or court battles over the tickets.
