The City Council this week has turned back a controversial proposal for an Aurora builder to redevelop an area along Batavia Road into town homes and apartments.

The council voted 5-2 Monday evening against the three-building development by Dwight Avram Builders that previously sailed unanimously through the Plan Commission.

“That doesn’t happen very often,” said Ronald Mentzer, Warrenville community development director.

Some residents had objected to the Warrenville Centre proposal for various reasons, including concerns over parking, traffic and population density. The plan also requested two zoning amendments, four special-use permits and 17 exceptions, variations or special approvals from zoning and sign ordinances.

The redevelopment would have razed four single-family homes located just north of a gas station at the corner of Warrenville and Batavia Roads. Three buildings were to be built on the combined properties, ranging from two-story town homes to a three-story apartment complex with small businesses on the ground floor.
