A Wheeling public works employee whose body was found inside a village pumping station this week died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Paramedics were unable to revive Chris Brown, 37, of Lake in the Hills after a co-worker discovered him slumped inside South Pumping Station, 95 Willow Rd., Wheeling spokesman James Lang said.

Brown had been operating a sand-blaster and was discovered about 10:30 a.m. Monday, Lang said. Brown was pronounced dead at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview.

“He had been in the building doing routine maintenance,” Lang said. “It was a traumatic call for Wheeling paramedics.”

Brown had been employed by the village since 1997, Lang said.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration was investigating the death.
