I recall that, several years ago, my mom and I would come to Chicago about every two years to visit my Aunt Ida. At that time, my aunt lived in Englewood.

My mind goes back to a day of each visit spent at Marshall Field’s. My cousin and I were dropped off at the children’s playroom to spend the day while Mom and Aunt Ida did their shopping. It was something, believe me–slides, swings, teeter-totters, sandboxes, etc. I think a little lunch was available, depending on whether shopping extended through noon.

On one other visit, I came back to Michigan, where we lived in Grand Rapids, with a chinchilla coat–and a hat to match! I was all dressed up. In my 11-year-old mind, I was gorgeous.

“Where did you buy it?” I heard.

“At Field’s in Chicago,” I answered, and I would go on to tell them of the wonderful day I had spent at that store.

I am 90 years old and I still remember that wonderful store.
