Marc Rosset announced his retirement, saying the Swiss Indoors at Basel would be his final pro tournament.

The 35-year-old Swiss player, whose biggest success was winning the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona, turned pro in 1988. His highest ranking in 17 years on the ATP Tour was ninth in 1995.

– Silvia Farina Elia, 33, the highest-ranked Italian female player in history (11th in 2002), retired after losing to Kirsten Flipkens 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Gaz de France at Hasselt, Belgium.
