We’ve found an alternative way to get some sugar: Celebrate the Day of the Dead. In Mexico, Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 1-2) welcomes home the spirits of the deceased with elaborate altars, special food and flowers, plus beautifully decorated calaveras, or skulls. No, not real skulls, sicko; they’re made of sugar, get gussied-up with icing, and often include the names of departed kinfolk. Learn to make your own Saturday at a skull basics class with Adobo Grill chef Freddy Sanchez and Pueblan artist Miquel Angel Quintana. You’ll also get lunch, a margarita and a customized skull for the road. Too cool for school? Quintana will make and decorate skulls at both Adobo locations this weekend, and he’ll customize one for you ($2-$12).

Sugar skull demos: 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at 1610 N. Wells St. 312-266-7999; 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, noon-6 p.m Sunday at 2005 W. Division St. 773-252-9990; class: Noon Saturday. $19.95. Reservations required. 2005 W. Division St. 773-252-9990.
