E-mail in Wilmette isn’t just for work or catching up with friends.

Residents can sign up to receive community alerts through their e-mail, text pagers or electronic organizers about events that may affect the street they live on, their neighborhood and businesses.

“We hope … the system will enable community members to stay current with events in their neighborhoods as well as provide them with needed information, which in turn can assist the police with conducting investigations,” said Jeff Hemesath, community relations officer with the Wilmette Police Department.

Although the village has offered the service for a year, only about 400 people have registered. Hemesath hopes to see that number grow.

To sign up, residents or business owners may go to silentpartneralert.com.
