It sounds like a plot from “Mission: Impossible,” but then again, Tom Cruise’s real life often is stranger than fiction.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the actor spent chunks of the ’80s and ’90s studying at a secretive Scientology desert compound 90 miles east of L.A., where a personal supervisor oversaw his private sessions.

“I was there for eight years, and nobody stayed long at all, except for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, during that period,” says Bruce Hines, a Scientologist who left the religion in 2001 after three decades.

Cruise reportedly remained at the 500-acre resort for weeks at a time, where a special staff attended to his every need, preparing his meals and washing his socks. Cruise declined the Times’ invitation to shed light on this new piece of laundry–dirty or otherwise.
