A man robbed a bank in a Northwest Side food store Monday afternoon, but police recovered some of the money after a dye pack in the cash exploded, authorities said.
The robber walked into the TCF Bank branch at the Jewel food store, 6430 W. Irving Park Rd., about 1 p.m., indicated to a teller that he had a weapon and handed over a note demanding money, police said.
The man, who did not reveal a weapon, placed the cash in a bag and walked out, a Chicago police spokeswoman said.
A few steps outside the store, a dye pack that had been placed in the bag of cash exploded, the spokeswoman said. The man dropped the bag and ran, she said.
No one had been arrested as of Monday evening.
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to contact the FBI’s Chicago office at 312-431-1333.
