This is regarding Sally Marshall’s “Sick and tired of those princesses” (Commentary, Jan. 19).

The problem with Marshall’s piece is that she is the mother of a 5-year-old.

She has no idea what it really takes to raise a daughter.

Believe me, to be or not to be a princess at age 5 has nothing to do with a girl’s ultimate strength of character, decision-making, choice of friends or, for that matter, spatial skills.

One of my favorite memories of my daughter is of her in a princess dress waiting at the curb for her friends to come to her 5-year-old birthday party.

She was so excited.

Now that child is 15.

She faces all the teenage challenges: drugs, alcohol, sex, stealing, grade pressure and friend pressure.

What really makes a difference is parental support of her unique talents and skills, help for her to develop self-discipline and self-control and support for her in developing her faith.

With all due respect to the princess thing, it really is just a memory.
