– An auction Thursday of personal effects of the late Bobby Short, the singer-pianist and darling of New York cafe society, fetched $777,720. Christie’s said people from Short’s hometown of Danville, Ill., were among the crowd in New York as furnishings and art from Short’s apartment sold out. A grand piano fetched $132,000, more than triple presale estimates. Short died in March.
– Country singer John Michael Montgomery has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence and possession of a controlled drug, Lexington, Ky., jail officials said.
