It’s a fact of life: Innovators don’t innovate forever. Jonathan More and Matt Black changed dance music forever via their late-’80s breakbeat experiments. It’s asking too much for the duo’s long-awaited new album to deliver that sort of impact, and it does not. The goulash of dance styles, from hip-hop to dub to house, isn’t much different from the format Coldcut pioneered on 1989’s “What’s That Noise.” And compared to the raw, ringtone-happy sounds of British hip-hop’s grime movement, nothing here could be called surprising. These dozen tunes have a melodic sophistication alien to much of the music More and Black have inspired.
