Glenbard East senior Mario Jez says he’s trying to approach Friday’s quarterfinal against Brother Rice as just another match.
But when you’re a first-time state qualifier, it’s sure hard to temper the excitement.
“I’ve never been to state, never seen it,” said Jez, a 6-foot-4-inch Tribune All-Stater who had 346 kills for the 31-8 Rams. “When we got to the sectional final, I thought, `This is big.’ But state is even bigger.”
The Rams, riding a 13-match winning streak, also rely on Barrett Segraves (206 kills, 44 blocks) and Ryan Webb (77 kills, 101 blocks).
