Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The telltale moment on this acoustic-pop disc–reminiscent to efforts by Shawn Colvin and the Indigo Girls–comes when Phillips sings on “Square Peg”: “I can’t seem to fit their mold/ And make my way past the entrance/ I have had my turn to play/ But never understood their game.” Phillips was once a budding Christian music star, but now finds herself an indie survivor–aided and abetted here by like-minded, talented misfits, including husband/guitarist/co-writer Andy Gullahorn, who have formed the Square Peg Alliance. There’s a touch of world-weariness in Phillips’ high tenor, but no misplaced cynicism dragging down her lyrics. What’s more, her tone and suppleness shine on songs such as “Turn It Around,” studded with elegant 12-string electric guitar phrases.
