While charismatic rapper Young Jeezy set a benchmark for crack rap, Yo Gotti’s latest album simply follows in its footsteps. Not to say the Memphis rapper’s album isn’t interesting; the smooth slow-tempoed track “Gangsta Party” is a modern classic, thanks to generous verses from veteran rappers 8ball and Bun B, and “Full Time” is a bass-heavy anthem that rides jagged, distorted guitars and a memorable vocal from Gotti. Like Jeezy, Gotti is not particularly focused on the breadth of his lyrics. Though an effective performer, it is hard to get particularly excited about a release that sticks so close to someone else’s formula.
