This is regarding “Ethics takes top spot in race for governor; Blagojevich, Topinka clash on reports from inspectors” (Metro, June 2), by Rick Pearson, Tribune political reporter.
I was somewhat shocked to read “[Gov. Rod] Blagojevich’s campaign also questioned how independent [Republican challenger, Illinois Treasurer Judy Baar] Topinka’s inspectors general had acted in the treasurer’s office since they had given campaign donations to her.”
I am the current executive inspector general for the treasurer, appointed to a position created by the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act of 2003.
In 1998, five years before this position was created, I did contribute $200 to Topinka.
At the time, I was employed by Cook County government. Obviously I did not contribute to her while I was in this position or even employed by the State of Illinois.
I have worked under the administrations of both Democrats and Republicans, always performing my duties in the same professional, independent manner.
Anyone who knows me and followed my 35-year career in law enforcement would not imply, as Pearson’s article suggests, that my integrity is for sale.
