The sky is falling, hell is freezing over–and Southwest Airlines is assigning seats. Until last week, the last possibility seemed the least likely. Reviled as it may be, “cattle-car” boarding has been the norm at Southwest since its first flight in 1971, and it has become part of the airline’s legendary efficiency. Los Angeles Times

As the Pew Hispanic Center documents, about 80 percent of third-generation Latinos in the United States speak English as their dominant language–and exactly 0 percent speak Spanish as their dominant language. The rest are considered bilingual, which means they’ll be able to tell their elders in their native tongue to learn English or get the hell out of the Land of Opportunity.

Ever hear of Sgt. Benny Alicea? Don’t feel bad; most Americans couldn’t tell you who he was or what he did. On Nov. 13, 2004, Sergeant Alicea was serving as a rifleman in Company A of the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Task Force in Fallujah, one of the terrorist strongholds in Iraq. His unit was ambushed and, despite being hit by shrapnel from two grenades, Alicea moved through a courtyard and out into the street. When his leg gave out from his wounds, he shielded three wounded soldiers from intense enemy fire…. Unfortunately, Alicea also epitomizes hundreds of U.S. soldiers who have done incredibly heroic things in fighting the war on terror with little fanfare or recognition from the media or the citizens of the country they’re fighting–and dying–to protect.

The presidential campaign is down to the wire, with a leftist in the lead. If he wins, his policies will impoverish millions. For the media, however, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador represents “the common man.” To read some of the maudlin coverage, Lopez Obrador has just the solution to Mexico’s persistent poverty: big social spending. And the voter discontent that fuels his appeal is based on the “failures” of capitalism…. If Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is elected, Mexico’s already overbearing government is going to get a lot bigger. At the expense of the common man.
