Norway’s Thor Hushovd reclaimed the overall Tour de France lead from George Hincapie on Monday during a sweltering ride in which Australia’s Robbie McEwen captured the second stage in a sprint finish at Esch-Sur-Alzette, Luxembourg.
Hincapie, the fourth American to wear the leader’s yellow jersey in the Tour’s 103-year history, fell to fourth overall. Belgium’s Tom Boonen is second.
– Former cycling trainer Freddy Sergant was sentenced to four years in jail and fined $230,000 in a trial centered on a doping ring that supplied a cocktail of amphetamines, cocaine and heroin to riders in France and Belgium. Sergant received the harshest of 23 sentences, which come amid a scandal that threw the Tour into chaos. Several top cyclists were withdrawn Friday because of a doping investigation in Spain.
