Oscar winner Hilary Swank drops a bombshell in the August issue of Vanity Fair, saying her divorce from Chad Lowe was due in part to his “substance-abuse problem.”
“I knew something was happening, but I didn’t know what,” Swank told the magazine. “When I found out, it was such a shock because I never thought he’d keep something from me.”
Swank says Lowe is “sober now,” but that the substance abuse contributed to their breakup after eight years of marriage. A call by The Associated Press to Lowe’s agent for comment was not immediately returned Wednesday.
She denied rumors that the breakup was a result of their careers. (Swank has enjoyed more commercial and critical success than fellow actor Lowe.) She also refrained from placing all of the blame on her ex.
“I make mistakes; I’m not some squeaky-clean person here,” she said.
