Fresh from the around-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, the Juan Kouyoumdjian-designed ABN AMRO Two, arrives in Chicago this week and will be moored at (and occasionally sailing near) Navy Pier before leaving for the Chicago to Mackinac Race Saturday. The ocean-racing speedster is 70 1/2-feet long with a mast that rises more than 103 feet above the water. ABN AMRO Two holds World Sailing Speed Record Council recognition for its 24-hour monohull distance record: 562.96 nautical miles, for an average speed of nearly 23.5 knots (27 m.p.h.). If it were to reach those speeds during the Mac, it would finish in about 14 hours. The Mac record, a few ticks more than 23 1/2 hours, was set by Roy Disney’s Pyewacket in 2002.
