Given the potential rewards of the research (cures for cancer, diabetes and a host of other diseases that plague mankind), I’m not sure we have the luxury of protecting discarded embryos on moral grounds.

Furthermore I’m not sure I buy the Bush administration’s opposition on the basis that it values human life too much to advocate the destruction of any embryos.

This administration’s support for gun ownership, the death penalty and pre-emptive military action have shown quite clearly how little regard our leadership has for the sanctity of human life.

The true reason the White House opposes this legislation is that it undercuts the Bush administration’s position on abortion. Allowing that some embryos may be expendable makes it harder for the administration to oppose legal abortion on strictly moral grounds.
