Third baseman David Wright became the latest young player on the Mets to get a long-term contract, signing a $55 million, six-year extension. Wright, 23, joins shortstop Jose Reyes, who signed a $23.25 million, four-year contract extension on Thursday.

David Ortiz became the first Red Sox player to hit 40 homers in three consecutive seasons with a fifth-inning shot Sunday at Tampa Bay. Only two other Boston players–Carl Yastrzemski and Manny Ramirez–have hit 40 or more homers in three different seasons.

The Dodgers extended their winning streak to nine games as they rallied in a six-run seventh inning that included three consecutive walks, two with the bases loaded, to complete their third series sweep in a row and climb over .500 at 56-55.

THREE DOWN

Starter Adam Eaton didn’t last long Sunday as he was ejected from the Rangers’ game against the Angels in the first inning after throwing a pitch–only his 18th but clocked at 90 m.p.h.–behind Juan Rivera after Garret Anderson’s three-run homer.

Orioles right-hander Rodrigo Lopez had a little trouble keeping the ball in the yard against the Yankees, giving up four solo shots to run his home run total to a team-high 26 for the season. “Once I missed my spot,” Lopez said, “they took advantage of it.”

Brewers pitcher Chris Capuano gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings in Sunday’s loss and is 0-4 in five starts since beating–who else?–the Cubs on July 6. The All-Star left-hander fell to 4-2 against the Cardinals overall and 3-1 in St. Louis.
