Lightning that caused a 52-minute weather delay was not the only storm to roll through Saturday night at Ball State. Northern Illinois’ Garrett Wolfe rumbled through the record books as well.

Wolfe gained 353 yards en route to setting an NCAA mark for most rushing yards through five games with 1,181, breaking his own NIU single-game rushing mark and becoming the school’s career touchdown leader in the Huskies’ 40-28 victory.

Wolfe recorded his 10th straight 100-yard rushing game, ran for more than 170 yards for the eighth straight game and passed the 200-yard mark for the eighth time in his career.

“I had a good game, but most of it was due to the offensive line and great blocking downfield from our wide receivers and tight ends,” Wolfe said. “I feel like we could put any of our backs in and they would be successful.”

NIU coach Joe Novak said: “We see that every week from him. He’s the most instinctive football player I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been around some good ones.”

Phil Horvath completed 20 of 27 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Brothers Britt and Brandon Davis each posted career-high nights with 115 and 61 receiving yards, respectively.

But kicker Chris Nendick’s PAT streak ended at 108.

NIU (3-2) earned its third consecutive victory.

“Ball State played like we expected them to,” Novak said. “They played hard, and they came at us. They’re a hard team to defend. They throw the ball so well.”
