It is difficult for Democrats like myself, angered by Republican posturing over the Bill Clinton affair, not to express glee over the Mark Foley affair. But it is a temptation we should resist, and not merely for reasons of political expediency. The reason to resist is provided by the Amish response to an act of brutal horror: forgiving the killer of their children and welcoming members of his family to join them in mourning their loved ones. In the polarized “gotcha” culture of Washington, loss of civility has led to cynicism and an inability to engage each other in conversation across ideological lines. The contrast between this way of doing the people’s business and the Amish practice of communal forgiving is instructive.
