James E. Shriner, 81, of Evanston, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, in Evanston Northwestern Hospital, Evanston, IL. Born Jan. 3, 1925, to Clarence E. and Vella S. Shriner in Meridian, MS. Jim lived in many cities due to his father’s work transfers and settled in Cincinnati, OH. He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Jim attended the University of Cincinnati, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history and political science and was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He voluntarily enlisted in the U. S. Navy during World War II and served as a Lieutenant in the Submarine Squadron in the Pacific. Following the war, Jim married Barbara Ann White on June 14, 1947, in Cincinnati, OH. His beloved wife, Barb, passed away on June 19, 2003. Jim worked in the restaurant business before joining Kresge Co. (K-Mart) in Chicago district store management. He changed career paths and worked in advertising, marketing and sales promotion at Ray- O-Vac Corp and Westclox, Division of General Time, before moving to Rockford in 1961 with the Howard H. Monk Advertising Agency. There, he rose to Vice President, Director and shareholder. Jim served as President of the Rockford Advertising Council and was a member of the Rockford Marketing Association. While in Rockford, Jim actively held numerous community positions, including Boy Scout Council Board member and District Chairman, Chairman of WAVE, a domestic violence intervention facility, member of the Board of Directors of Milestone, Inc. and member of the University Club of Rockford, Rockford Country Club and Westminster Presbyterian Church. In 1979, Jim purchased a partnership in the Janesville Group, Ltd., Janesville, WI and served as a Director and Vice President of Marketing. He retired in 1990, went into private consulting and purchased a second home in Naples, FL, where he served as President of the Condominium Association and was active in the Beta Theta Pi Alumni. In 2005, Jim moved from Rockford to Presbyterian Homes, Westminster Place in Evanston, IL. He is survived by his three daughters, Mary Ann (Richard) Lillie of Chicago, IL, Beth Thompson of Urbandale, IA and Jennifer (Thomas) Hay of Evanston, IL; three grandchildren, Peter Thompson of Rock Island, IL, Alexander Hay and Abigail Hay of Evanston. Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, in Elliott Chapel of Presbyterian Homes, 3200 Grant St., Evanston.
