Although Illinois ran for 202 yards and passed for 156 in Saturday’s 26-12 loss at Penn State, third-down conversions again were a major problem. The Illini failed on 12 of their 14 attempts. Penn State, which had 144 passing yards but was held to 40 rushing yards, was 6-for-16 on third down. . . . The Nittany Lions’ 24 rushing attempts were the eighth fewest in the 41 years Joe Paterno has coached at Penn State. . . . Penn State junior linebacker Dan Connor was impressed with Illinois freshman quarterback Juice Williams. “That was pretty much the focus of the game, trying to contain Williams,” Connor said. “He’s really elusive, a tough guy to tackle.”
