The Grayslake Greenery Garden Club is offering scholarships to Lake County high school and college students. The competition for up to $1,500 in scholarship money is open to graduating high school seniors, community college, college and graduate students pursuing studies in horticulture-related fields such as landscape architecture, agriculture, forestry and floral design. The Friends of Volo Bog is offering two $1,000 college scholarships to Lake or McHenry County high school seniors and college students. One scholarship will go to a high school student interested in pursuing a natural science or environmental degree. The other will go to a high school graduate who is in a natural science or an environmental field of study at an accredited college or university. Applications are due by Feb. 23. DISTRICT 30

The district will hold an open forum on the search for a new superintendent at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Maple School, 2370 Shermer Rd. in Northbrook. School Exec Connect, an educational search firm, will assist with the superintendent search. Supt. Linda Vieth will be leaving District 30 at the end of the school year to become superintendent at District 29 in Northfield.

Willowbrook School principal Melissa Hirsch will hold a book chat at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the school’s Learning Media Center, 2500 Happy Hollow Rd., Glenview. She will read from “Once Upon a Marigold,” by Jean Ferris. For more information, call 847-498-1090.

The College of Lake County Foundation’s “Heart of Gold” gala on Oct. 28 raised $125,000 for scholarships, $30,000 more than the previous year. The foundation awarded $500,000 in scholarships in 2005, assisting more than 700 students.

The College of Lake County’s homecoming is scheduled for Jan. 25-27. Alumni and friends of CLC are invited to attend men’s and women’s basketball games, a homecoming dance, a comedy show and a casino night. Campus tours will be given from 3 to 4 p.m. Jan. 25, followed by an alumni and faculty reception from 4 to 5 p.m. To attend the reception, please call the Alumni Relations Office at 847-543-2400.
