Mike Denson must have learned something from Richards teammate Tommie Thomas at the Kankakee Holiday Tournament.
Thomas, coming off the bench last week as he has done all season, earned the tournament Most Valuable Player Award as he led his team to the title. On Friday night, Denson, another non-starter, stole the show against Reavis–literally.
Denson, a senior guard, was the second man off the bench behind Thomas. He had five of his six steals and 14 of his team-high 19 points in the first half in leading his team to a 21-point halftime lead en route to a 73-46 South Suburban Red victory in Burbank.
“It’s more fun coming off the bench because you don’t have as much pressure on you,” Denson said. “You get to see the game from the bench, but hopefully next time I’ll be out there at the beginning of the game.”
The No. 13 Bulldogs (13-0, 4-0) led 24-10 after the first quarter and 44-23 after the second. The host Rams (10-4, 2-2) were led by Julian Ibarra’s 24 points.
Carl Richard, a transfer from Young, totaled 15 points and six rebounds for Richards. Kodhamus Llongbey and Teray Whisby had 11 points each.
