Concerns over theft are prompting Schaumburg Village Board members to rethink a proposal to ban overnight and weekend parking of commercial trailers in residential neighborhoods.
Members of the board’s Planning, Building and Development Committee heard about a dozen contractors and business owners express concern this week that being forced to park their trailers away from home could make them more vulnerable to thefts of tools.
“I’ve got about $60,000 worth of tools in that trailer,” said Ron Johnson Sr., who operates a home remodeling business. “It gets parked on the side of the house every night.”
Trustees voiced support for a revised measure that would allow some types of trailers to be parked overnight or on weekends as long as they were on asphalt or concrete pads. The revised ordinance will come back to the committee Feb. 1.
The initial proposal was sent to the committee after Trustee George Dunham called it unnecessarily restrictive.
The revised ordinance would allow trailers only if they are enclosed or empty. Contractors would not be allowed to park open trailers loaded with equipment next to their homes.
“Two Bobcats and an end loader in the driveway, I think that’s a bit of a stretch,” Dunham said.
