Marist overcame an Olympian effort by Hinsdale Central’s Molly Kinsella to hand the eighth-ranked Red Devils their first loss of the season Monday.

Kinsella, daughter of former Olympic swimmer John Kinsella, helped Hinsdale storm back from a 48-30 deficit and scored with nine-tenths of a second left to tie the game 52-52. But behind Kelsey James and Maureen Mulchrone, No. 7 Marist posted a 65-56 overtime victory at the McDonald’s Shootout at Willowbrook.

Trailing 52-50, the Red Devils (19-1) had five chances to score in the final 10 seconds. It took the last of Kinsella’s three straight offensive rebounds in those moments to tie the game–and she was fouled. Luckily for the RedHawks (21-2), Kinsella missed the ensuing free throw.

“She had the really big height advantage,” the 5-foot-11-inch Mulchrone said of the 6-2 Kinsella, who finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds. “I wanted her to miss it [the free throw], I’m sorry to say.”

James hit five three-pointers and led Marist with 19 points. Mulchrone added 16 and freshman Haley Stercic 13. Lindsay Williams had 18 points and Toni Kokenis 10 for the Red Devils, who had 17 first-half turnovers in falling behind 31-20.

No. 1 Fenwick (18-1) recovered from its loss to Bolingbrook on Saturday by defeating South Bend St. Joseph (12-2) 62-52. Devereaux Peters scored 26 points and Alison Jackson 23 for the Friars. That more than offset the 31 scored by Tennessee recruit Sydney Smallbone.

“I feel we had to make up for Saturday,” said the Notre Dame-bound Peters, who had eight rebounds and three blocks.
