If the Seahawks’ loss Sunday stung Seattle’s pride, Wednesday’s episode of “American Idol” pretty much carpet-bombed it.
A parade of oddballs in Seattle–a group so eclectic that the singer who nicknamed herself “The Hotness” didn’t even crack the top 5 in terms of weirdness–butchered just about every song and heard just about every putdown the judges could come up with.
There was the girl who mumbled “Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?” (Simon Cowell’s answer: “No.”) There was the bug-eyed guy whom Cowell compared to a “jungle creature.” And there was a Bizarro Taylor Hicks look-alike, who wasn’t exactly bringing Soul Patrol back.
All of that, and more, likely made for more great TV ratings for Fox. Tuesday’s “Idol” premiere averaged an eye-popping 37.3 million viewers, the highest premiere number in the show’s history.
And the “Idol” train is just getting rolling. Diana Ross told David Letterman she’ll be a mentor on the show, and unconfirmed rumors of guest appearances by Mariah Carey and Paul McCartney have been floating around.
