The Detroit quartet channels the sound of irony-free 1970s Detroit garage-rock: guitars-bass-drums mayhem dosed with a shot of soul worthy of the Grande Ballroom greats (Stooges, MC5, Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger). On their third album, the Paybacks replicate their white-hot live show in the studio; singer Windy Case elevates the ten-ton riffs with a voice that sounds like grenades exploding. Case shouts herself to the brink of laryngitis, yet has enough feel for melody to keep the tunes from collapsing. The band brings the rock with fury, but has enough touch to dial it back a notch when a pop hook (“Dumb Love,” “Divided by Two”) or a midnight confession (“Something Simple”) requires.
