Maybe you heard. The coach of the new Super Bowl champions will be an African-American. The media hype is already out there. This is the first time in history that two black head football coaches, let alone one black head football coach, have made it to a Super Bowl. I love history. I loved the walk on the moon, the day they tore down the Berlin Wall and the day Doug Williams, the first African-American quarterback, won the Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins.
But please, let’s not play the race card here. I don’t believe Tony Dungy or Lovie Smith wants that. They both know their teams made it to Miami with offense, defense and special teams–black and white athletes playing together as a team–not because of their race.
It’s an historical event and we shouldn’t overlook history, this is true, and I don’t believe we will.
But, personally, I don’t care if the coaches are black, white, Asian or Native American, as long as they can coach football well, at a high level.
The sad thing here is that it took the NFL almost 100 years for a matchup so historically special.
Good luck to both teams.
