In the movie “Dreamgirls,” hairstyles stand out just as much as those mesmerizing outfits. For the throwback styles of the ’50s and ’60s, celebrity hairstylist Kimberly Kimble used Donna Summer, Freda Payne and Audrey Hepburn for inspiration. Kimble recently talked about how she brought hair to life for Beyonce Knowles’ evolution from a Dreamette to a dream realized.

Was there pressure to make Knowles look glamorous for every take?

Beyonce is a chameleon and naturally beautiful. It wasn’t difficult at all.

How can women recreate those styles without overdosing on products?

Add in hairpieces and make sure that whatever product you use adds volume so that you don’t have to overdose on product. I’ve used Bumble & Bumble hair powder that comes in colors and gives hair boosting volume.

What was your favorite style from the movie?

Vidal Sassoon’s signature asymmetrical bob.

Can you share the biggest styling challenge you faced on the set?

Toning Beyonce’s character (Deena) down in the beginning of the movie–when she has yet to evolve into the glamorous lead singer of the Dreams–was definitely the biggest styling challenge.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

Doing freelance with music artists on video shoots. Also promoting my hair-care line called Kimble Hair Care System.
