As an alumnus of the University of Illinois, I join with others in mourning the demise of Chief Illiniwek. For more than 80 years, the Chief was a respected symbol of a great University. If the Native American community expected to gain support for its many causes by attacking the Chief, it has achieved a curious public relations result. All it has done is galvanize opposition from thousands of students, many more thousands of alumni and legions of amazed reasonable observers.
