*Nichols Middle School, 800 Greenleaf St. in Evanston, will present the play “Faces of Freedom” by Cynthia Mercati on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Friday for the student body. The play explores immigration through the eyes of teenagers from around the world. Call Nichols School at 847-859-8660.
HIGHLAND PARK
*Two teenagers from Highland Park were named 2007 Presidential Scholars. Ilana B.Goldberg attends Highland Park High School and Phoebe C. Rusch attends Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. The award is given to 141 outstanding U.S. high school seniors who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, and service at school and in the community. The Presidential Scholars will be honored for their accomplishments from June 23 to 27 in Washington. Each student is asked to invite his or her most inspiring and challenging teacher to receive a Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education and participate in the recognition events. Goldberg chose Sheri Owens of Lake Forest and Rusch chose Jack Driscoll of Interlochen, Mich.
NORTHBROOK AND GLENVIEW, DISTRICT 30
*Television and movie director D.J. MacHale will visit Maple School in Northbrook on May 21 to talk about his book series “Pendragon–Journal of an Adventure Through Time and Space.” MacHale has written, directed and produced several television series and movies, including the Nickelodeon series “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” and the movie “Tower of Terror” for ABC’s “Wonderful World of Disney.”
WILMETTE
*Regina Dominican Catholic High School says 58 students qualified for achievement certificates and bookstore coupons from Illinois’ Read for a Lifetime program. Certificates will be presented to seniors at Regina’s convocation May 31 and to all others during the fall 2007 awards ceremony. Administrators said 249 reports were submitted by 63 students during the school year. The reports covered all but one title on the state list.
