GAGES LAKE/GURNEE DISTRICT 50
*Woodland Elementary East teacher Nancy Goodwin and Woodland Middle School teacher Kristin Schuler were selected by the Sigma Xi Chapter of Abbott Lab for the Outstanding Teacher Award. Recipients receive a $200 check. A $500 grant was awarded to Woodland Elementary East and Woodland Middle to purchase teaching aids and equipment.
*Second graders at Woodland Elementary West will plant their Giving Garden this month. The children are growing seedlings in their classrooms and will plant them next week in the garden behind the school. Last year the school donated more than 450 pounds of vegetables to the Warren Township food pantry.
LAKE VILLA DISTRICT 41
*The Board of Education has named Ron Vickers to fill the 2-year term left vacant by the resignation of Sean Carney, who moved out of the district. Re-elected incumbents Joanne Osmond and Darla Vanderwall and newly elected board members Julie Sheehan and Michael Conway were sworn in Wednesday for their four-year terms.
* Students in kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grade at Martin School were required to have a dental exam on file with the school nurse by Tuesday. Please call the school nurse with any questions, 847-245-6622.
VERNON HILLS DISTRICT 73
*Hawthorn Middle School North placed in the top 10 at the state Science Olympics on April 20 at the University of Illinois at Champaign. Of the 158 schools that competed this year, only 37 moved on to state. Of those teams, Hawthorn North placed 9th overall. Several project teams earned top finishes, including Metric Mastery (1st), Tower Building (3rd), Solar System (3rd), Science Crime Busters (4th), Road Scholar (5th), Write It, Do It (5th), Disease Detectives (5th), Meteorology (6th), Rocks and Fossils (7th), and Ecology (8th).
