Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa abandoned his crusade Friday to seize control of city schools, saying he would not appeal a court decision that blocked his plan to help run the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The California 2nd District Court of Appeal last month upheld a ruling that found the mayor’s plan to shift some district powers to his office was unconstitutional.
“It’s time to get out of the courtroom and into the classroom,” Villaraigosa said.
The district is the nation’s second largest, with more than 708,000 students in kindergarten through the 12th grade.
