Derek Jeter’s slow chopper just past the first-base side of the mound with the bases loaded scored Robinson Cano and lifted the Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Pirates in 10 innings for their fourth straight win. Cano’s leadoff double in the 10th started the rally.
Raul Ibanez saved the night with a home run in the 11th inning as the Mariners defeated the Padres 6-5. Ibanez drilled a 2-1 offering from Cla Meredith over the wall in left-center. The Mariners, who have won 12 of their last 17 games, had blown a 5-0 lead.
Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew, who entered Friday hitting .224, hit two three-run homers and drove in a career-high seven in a 10-3 win over the Diamondbacks. His first blast came with two outs in the third: Drew hit Doug Davis’ first pitch into the left-center field seats for a 4-0 lead.
THREE DOWN
Former White Sox pitcher Freddy Garcia didn’t survive the second inning of the Phillies’ 8-4 loss to the Royals. He gave up homers to Mark Grudzielanek and Mike Sweeney in a 6-run second. Garcia’s ERA ballooned to 5.90 as he allowed seven hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Center fielder B.J. Upton left the Devil Rays’ 14-8 loss to the Marlins with what appeared to be a left leg injury, trying to run out a grounder in the first. On top of that, the Rays blew an 8-2 lead. Upton is batting a team-best .320 with 31 RBIs this season.
It was a rough night for the Tigers as they were shut out for the first time this year against the Mets. And manager Jim Leyland said before the game that he doesn’t expect fireballing reliever Joel Zumaya (finger) to return this season.
