Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It was a made-for-TiVo finale.

(This is your warning. If you’re the only one in Chicago who hasn’t seen Sunday night’s “Sopranos” finale, stop reading this now.

Ready. Set.)

Tony Soprano’s alive, rival mob boss Phil isn’t, and the family endures. Or do they?

To be sure, I had to rewind the TiVo. Twice.

The finale certainly provided a water-cooler ending. Just not the one I expected.

I’ve spent the last few weeks scouring the blogs and message boards for “Sopranos” finale hints. I read them with one hand partially covering my eyes. I wanted to know and not know at the same time.

Not one spoiler prepared me for Sunday night’s ending.

I’d like to believe series creator David Chase crafted his version of a “Choose Your Own Adventure.” I get to decide how the “Sopranos” story should progress.

Perhaps Tony finds another way to avoid serving time. A.J. moves to Hollywood to produce “Cleaver II.” Meadow makes loads of money as a lawyer and hires someone to park her car. Paulie learns to love cats.

All of these are possibilities, thanks to Chase’s ingenuity. Now Tony and this series remain very much alive (in my head).
