Current quarterbacks Byron Leftwich and David Garrard said the Jaguars have told them they have interest in acquiring Daunte Culpepper, assuming the disgruntled Dolphins quarterback gets the release he’s seeking. Culpepper, acquired by Miami in 2006, had his best NFL seasons with the Vikings and coach Mike Tice — now an assistant head coach in Jacksonville under Jack Del Rio.

*Charles Blair McDonald, a key figure in early U.S. and Chicago golf, is being inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame. McDonald, who grew up in Chicago, was the founder and designer of the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, which in 1893 became the first 18-hole course in America. He also was instrumental in helping to organize the United States Golf Association in 1895.

*Goaltender Dominik Hasek, 42, wants to play another season for the Red Wings, general manager Ken Holland said. “He’s an unrestricted free agent, so now we have to negotiate a new deal,” Holland said. “I don’t anticipate it being a problem.” … Ducks coach Randy Carlyle signed a one-year extension to guide the Stanley Cup champs through 2008-09. … The Sabres are expected to announce extensions for coach Lindy Ruff and GM Darcy Regier on Thursday. … Oilers assistant general manager Scott Howson reportedly will be named the Blue Jackets’ GM.

*The Timberwolves have reached an agreement to trade point guard Mike James to the Rockets for power forward Juwan Howard, a 13-year veteran who averaged 9.7 points and 5.7 rebounds last season.
