Jake Peavy allowed two hits in seven innings to help the Padres snap a four-game losing streak in a 9-0 win over the Devil Rays. Peavy struck out eight while extending his streak of consecutive innings without allowing a homer to 69, spanning 10 starts.
Ian Snell pitched his first career complete game as the Pirates beat the Rangers 8-1. The 25-year-old right-hander gave up an unearned run and seven hits, striking out seven in 105 pitches. He has allowed only three earned runs in three June starts, dropping his ERA to 2.63.
With the Brewers’ lead in the NL Central starting to get tenuous, Bill Hall came through in the clutch. Hall hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth off reliever Fernando Rodney as the Brewers edged the Tigers 3-2. Hall took a 3-2 offering over the wall in left field.
THREE DOWN
Just six days after Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling barely missed a no-hitter, he allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits in five innings in a 12-2 loss to the Rockies. The no-hit bid ended quickly this time as he allowed a leadoff infield single to Willy Taveras.
Orioles closer Chris Ray capped a rough night for bullpens in Baltimore, giving up three runs in the top of the 11th in a 9-6 loss to the Nationals, who had earlier blown two saves (Jon Rauch, Chad Cordero). Chad Bradford also had a blown save for the Orioles.
Astros reliever Dan Wheeler was ripped for five runs — all with two outs — in the eighth inning of a 7-3 loss to the Athletics. Mark Ellis broke 3-3 tie with two-run double and then Trever Miller gave up two-run single to Eric Chavez.
