THREE UP
Ex-White Sox slugger Frank Thomas hit his 244th homer as a designated hitter in the Blue Jays’ 4-2 loss to the Nationals, breaking Edgar Martinez’s major-league record. “I’m proud to pass him,” said Thomas, who hit it off former Cub Micah Bowie in the third inning.
The Rangers had everything go right in an 11-4 win over the Reds. Kevin Millwood struck out a season-high 10 as he won his first start since April 13, and Marlon Byrd hit his first major-league homer since last July 4 as Texas won just its second road series of the season.
The Indians’ Casey Blake extended the longest hitting streak in the majors this season to 26 games with a first-inning single off Kyle Davies in a 5-2 victory over the Braves. Blake had been tied with Ichiro Suzuki of the Mariners for the longest streak this season.
THREE DOWN
Mets starter Orlando Hernandez was roughed up by his former teammates in an 8-2 loss to the Yankees. Hernandez allowed six runs on seven hits in just 4 2/3 innings, including Alex Rodriguez’s AL-best 27th homer of the season and Johnny Damon’s solo shot.
The Orioles lost to the Diamondbacks 6-4 to finish 1-8 on their homestand. Arizona scored three in the eighth off two relievers. The skid could cost manager Sam Perlozzo his job, but it’s hard to fault him for a bullpen that went 0-5 with a 6.00 ERA on the homestand.
The Dodgers lost the Los Angeles “Freeway Series” to the Angels five games to one after the Angels’ 10-4 victory in Sunday’s finale. Randy Wolf gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings — equaling his shortest outing of the season.
